Al Qaeda commander Abou Zeid killed in Mali: Ennahar TV

Al Qaeda commander Abou Zeid killed in Mali: Ennahar TV

One of al Qaeda's most influential figures in North Africa has been killed in a French airstrike in northern Mali, according to sources close to the French military command in the country.Abdelhamid Abou Zeid was a deputy leader of al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb and one of its most ruthless commanders, having seized at least a dozen foreigners for ransom. At least two have been killed; several French citizens remain captive.Military sources quoted by French media say that in the past few days Abou Zeid and a substantial number of his fighters were killed during a French bombardment near Aguelhok in northern Mali.A spokesman for France's Elysee presidential palace declined to comment. Algeria's government, Malian and Chadian officials could not confirm Abou Zeid's killing.

A French army official, who would not comment on Abou Zeid, confirmed that about 40 Islamists had been killed in heavy fighting over the last week in the mountainous Tigargara region. The official said 1,200 French troops, 800 Chadian soldiers and some elements of the Malian army were still in combat to the south of Tessalit in the Adrar mountain range. For much of the last year, a constellation of jihadist forces including Abou Zeid had controlled large parts of northern Mali after ethnic Tuareg rebels had forced the army to retreat. He spent much of his time in and around Timbuktu, partly at a luxurious mansion that had been built for Moammar Gadhafi, according to reports from the city.At the beginning of this year, Abou Zeid joined other Islamist forces making a push southward toward the capital Bamako. But when the Islamist advances prompted a French intervention, he moved to the area around the less accessible city of Kidal, close to the virtually impenetrable Ifoghas mountains.

US News : Sequester: No deal in sight on automatic US budget cuts

US News : Sequester: No deal in sight on automatic US budget cuts

AMERICAN government spending is facing an automatic hit of $85bn (£56bn) in cuts as Congress appears unlikely to reach a compromise over the budget before a deadline that expires tonight.

Unless a deal is reached by midnight (5am Saturday morning in the UK) the cuts will kick in for various federal budgets.

The initial $85bn applies to the next seven months, yet the total amount of automatic cuts – known as sequestration – would be $1.2 trillion over the subsequent decade, unless politicians come up with an alternative budget plan in the meantime.
President Barack Obama has invited congressional leaders to the White House for negotiations.

Mr Obama warned that the cuts will harm the economy. The IMF said they could have a global impact on growth.

On Thursday budget bills from both parties were defeated in the Senate, and a top Republican said the House would wait for Senate action.

The president accused Senate Republicans of allowing the cuts to proceed rather than "closing a single tax loophole that benefits the well-off and well-connected".
The president said that by not doing a budget deal to avoid the cuts, Congress will impose a "self-inflicted wound" on America.

The BBC's Mark Mardell in Washington says the cuts are meant to hurt - they were deliberately designed two years ago to be so brutally painful that politicians of left and right would be forced to agree on a better way of balancing the books.

Bangladesh Islamic party leader Delwar Hossain Sayeedi to die

Bangladesh Islamic party leader Delwar Hossain Sayeedi to die

DHAKA, Feb. 28-In a much awaited verdict, a Bangladeshi tribunal on Thursday handed death sentence to Islamic party leader accused of committing 1971 war crimes. Sayeedi was accused of working with the Al-Badr group during the independence struggle and carrying out numerous atrocities, including forcibly converting Hindus to Islam.

Since his arrest, the tribunal disposed of a number of bail petitions. Responding to a prayer by Sayedee’s counsel, the court directed the authorities to ensure better treatment of the accused in the hospital and for providing him with “health friendly” transport during his movement between the jail, the tribunal and the hospital. The tribunal suffered its big jolt when the judge presiding over the ICT-1 resigned last month after the British magazine The Economist reported that it received e-mails and Skype conversations between the judge and Ahmed Ziauddin, a Bengali citizen who resides in Belgium from an unknown source. His critics say that during the war he formed a small group to loot and seize the property of Bengali Hindus and those who supported independence.who have been taking to the streets since Feb. 5 demanding capital punishment for the war criminals, expressed their jubilation over the tribunal verdict .

Lawyers for the defendant boycotted the tribunal during the verdict. Comments from Sayedee´s lawyers were not immediately available, but he had previously denied the allegations and said the charges were politically motivated.Islamic party, a key ally of the country's main opposition party, denies committing atrocities and says the charges are politically motivated. It has called a general strike on Thursday to protest Sayedee's expected conviction.

Teenage Maldives girl flogged for ‘premarital sex'

Teenage Maldives girl flogged for ‘premarital sex'

Maldives court has sentenced a 15-year-old alleged rape victim to 100 lashes and eight months under house arrest after she admitted having had premarital sex in a separate incident, The child's stepfather faces up to 25 years in prison if convicted of rape and a murder charge, after he allegedly killed a baby which resulted from his rape of his step-daughter. The premarital sex charge against the teenager has been condemned by rights groups and the government has urged leniency towards the girl, saying she had been traumatised by the repeated rapes by her stepfather. Zaima Nasheed, a spokesperson for the juvenile court, said the girl was also ordered to remain under house arrest at a children's home for eight months. But during investigation, the 15-year-old was accused of having pre-marital sex with another man. She is now being sentenced to eight months of house arrest and to 100 lashes,

President Mohamed Waheed’s spokesman Masood Imad told AFP in January that the girl should be treated as a victim rather than a perpetrator of a crime. The case was sent for prosecution after police were called to investigate a dead baby buried on the island of Feydhoo in Shaviyani Atoll, in the north of the country.

In September a Maldivian court ordered the public flogging of a 16-year-old who confessed to premarital sex.We are very surprised that the government is not doing anything to stop this punishment - to remove it altogether from the statute books. This is not the only case. It is happening frequently - only last month there was another girl who was sexually abused and sentenced to lashes. He said he did not know when the punishment was last carried out as people were not willing to discuss it openly.

Pope Benedict XVI to hold final papal audience in Vatican

Pope Benedict XVI to hold final papal audience in Vatican

The Vatican official told media that Benedict's ring of office as pope will be destroyed, according to Vatican tradition. And his papers have been split between documents regarding the government of the Church, "which will go to the competent archives", but he will keep his personal notes, Lombardi added.Organisers say there will be no traditional kissing of the pontiff's hand because of the sheer size of the expected crowd.
"He doesn't want to favour one or the other of the pilgrims," Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi told the AFP news agency.

The abrupt resignation of the most senior Roman Catholic cardinal in Britain on Monday — after accusations that he made unwanted sexual advances toward priests years ago — showed that the taint of scandal could force a cardinal from participating in the selection of a new pope. He will keep the papal title Benedict XVI, rather than reverting to the name Joseph Ratzinger, and will be referred to as "his holiness," Vatican spokesman the Rev. Among the crowds are groups of pilgrims who've traveled to Rome for an occasion that will be of great emotional significance for many of the faithful.

Rumours and counter-rumours in the Italian media suggest cut-throat behind-the-scenes lobbying, prompting the Vatican to condemn what it has called "unacceptable pressure" to influence the papal election. It will begin with Benedict's final tour of the famous Vatican plaza in his white "popemobile" and could include parting words addressed to Catholics in his diocese of Rome and around the world.

Benedict has said he will also swap his trademark red shoes for a brown pair given to him by artisans in Mexico during a trip last year. Starting next week, cardinals from around the world will begin a series of meetings to decide what the priorities for the Catholic Church should be, set a start date for the conclave and consider possible candidates for pope.Special prayers will be said during the "sede vacante," or empty seat, period, seeking guidance for the election of the new pope. The cardinals will lead the prayers.

Alleged Pak spy held near IAF firing range

Alleged Pak spy held near IAF firing range

Two days after India concluded its “Iron Fist” military exercise near the city of Jaisalmer, Indian police announced they had arrested a Pakistani spy living in the region where the exercises took place. Following a tip, authorities raided the home of the alleged spy and found “strategically important documents” along with a collection of cell phones. Unnamed sources reporting to the Times of India suggested that the accused, Sumer Khan, would speak with an uncle in Pakistan who would then relay information back to Pakistan’s ISI. Further statements claim that Khan had travelled to Pakistan three times to attend ISI training on intelligence collection. Though there’s a lot of information about this case that hasn’t yet been released, it does make sense that Pakistan would use on the ground HUMIT sources to monitor Indian military developments in an area so close to a shared border.

Thirtyfive-year-old Sumar Khan, a resident of Karmon ki Dhani hamlet in Chandhan, was found to be providing sensitive information to Pakistan’s Financial Monitoring Unit (FIU), said intelligence authorities.
Khan was arrested under Sections 3 and 3/9 of the Official Secrets Act and presented in an ACJM court in Jaipur which sent him to an eight-day police remand during which he will be questioned by State and Central intelligence authorities at the Central Interrogation Centre, Jaipur. “Sumar Khan was providing Pakistani intelligence with information regarding military activities happening at the Chandhan field firing range, Lathi and Pokharan,” said Dalpat Singh Dinkar, Additional Director-General of Police (Intelligence).

He visited Pakistan in October-November last year where he came in contact with Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) through his maternal uncle Shah Mohammad who lives in Rahim Yar Khan in Pakistan,” the officer said.

SP Jaisalmer Pankaj Kumar Chaudhary said that following interception of his calls to Pakistan, Sumaar, an Indian national, was caught from his home on Sunday morning.

In October-November last year, Khan had travelled to Pakistan and had received spy training from Pak intelligence, he said.

When served a notice under Section 8 of the Official Secrets Act, Khan admitted to having met a Pakistani Handling officer through his Pakistani relative Shah Mohammad last year in November, said Mr. Dinkar.

Huge protest vote leaves Italy facing deadlock

Huge protest vote leaves Italy facing deadlock

Italy faced political deadlock on Tuesday after a stunning election that saw the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement of comic Beppe Grillo become the strongest party in the country but left no group with a clear majority in parliament. The center-left coalition led by Pier Luigi Bersani won the lower house by around 125,000 votes and claimed the most seats in the Senate but was short of the majority in the upper house that it would need to govern.

Bersani claimed victory but said it was obvious that Italy was in "a very delicate situation". Party officials said the center-left would try to form a government but it was unclear what its options would be.
A huge protest vote by Italians enraged by economic hardship and political corruption left the euro zone's third-largest economy facing a dangerous vacuum on Monday after an election in which no group won enough votes to form a government....

Bersani claimed victory but said it was obvious that Italy was in "a very delicate situation". Party officials said the center-left would try to form a government but it was unclear what its options would be.Neither Grillo, a comedian-turned-politician who previously ruled out any alliance with another party, nor Silvio Berlusconi's center-right bloc, which threatened to challenge the close tally, showed any immediate willingness to negotiate.

World financial markets reacted nervously to the prospect of a government stalemate in the euro zone's third-largest economy with memories still fresh of the financial crisis that took the 17-member currency bloc to the brink of collapse in 2011.Mr Berlusconi, 76, appeared to be leading in the Senate race, but Mr Grillo’s projected bloc of Senators would leave him well short of a majority.
Even if the next government turns away from the tax hikes and spending cuts brought in by Monti, it will struggle to revive an economy which has scarcely grown in two decades.

Monti was widely credited with tightening Italy's public finances and restoring its international credibility after the scandal-plagued Berlusconi, whom he replaced as the 2011 financial crisis threatened to spin out of control.

Raul Castro To Step Down In 2018

Raul Castro To Step Down in 2018

Cuban leader Raúl Castro announced on Sunday he would step down from power after his second term as president ends in 2018.

Castro made the announcement in a nationally broadcast speech shortly after the Cuban National Assembly elected him to a second five-year term in the opening session of the new parliament.Once again, before you and all of our people, I assume the honour of presiding over the Council of State and the government. In this sense, I think it's important to reiterate what has been said twice in this parliament: I was not elected president to restore capitalism in Cuba, nor to hand over the revolution. I was elected to defend, maintain and continue perfecting socialism; not to destroy it."

The 81-year-old Raul Castro -- who officially replaced his ailing brother as president in 2008 -- also called for term limits of top officials. The new government will almost certainly be the last headed up by the Castro brothers and their generation of leaders who have ruled Cuba since they swept down from the mountains in the 1959 revolution.
Cubans and foreign governments were keenly watching whether any new, younger faces appeared among the Council of State members, in particular its first vice president and five vice presidents. He was a senior Communist Party official for Villa Clara and Holguin provinces, where there were important openings with foreign investment in tourism,” said Mr. López Levy. He added that Mr. Díaz-Canel often worked as an intermediary between the central government and the military, which has taken an expanded role in tourism under Raúl Castro. “In that sense,” Mr. López Levy said, “he will face the challenge and opportunity to prepare a smooth landing for a new type of civil-military relationship in the future.”Raul Castro has encouraged small businesses and cooperatives in retail services, farming, minor manufacturing and retail, and given more autonomy to state companies which still dominate the economy. The party plan also includes an opening to more foreign investment. At the same time, Cuba continues to face a U.S. administration bent on restoring democracy and capitalism to the island and questions about the future largess of oil rich Venezuela with strategic ally Hugo Chavez battling cancer.

Park Geun-hye sworn in as South Korea president

Park Geun-hye was sworn-in as South Korea's new president Monday, becoming the first woman to lead the country.
Park said she would work to reinvigorate South Korea's economy and warned North Korea against pursuing its nuclear ambitions, Yonhap News Agency reported.Ms Park, who defeated liberal rival Moon Jae-in in December's general election, took the oath of office in front of tens of thousands of people.North Korea's recent nuclear test posed a "challenge to the survival" of the Korean people, North Korea's recent nuclear test posed a "challenge to the survival" of the Korean people, she said.

Trust-building was needed to tackle the "extremely serious" security situation."I will usher in a new era of hope whereby the happiness of each citizen becomes the bedrock of our nation's strength which in turn is shared by and benefits all Koreans," she said.

When she was elected last December, Park broke barriers in the patriarchal East Asian nation, though she is deeply connected to its past. Her father, Park Chung-hee, was one of the founders of modern Korea who took power after a coup d'etat and ruled heavy-handedly for 18 years before being shot dead by his intelligence chief in 1979.

Park, 61, is the daughter of former President Park Chung-hee, who was assassinated 34 years ago.
Her inauguration was marked with a celebratory striking of the Boshingak bell at the center of Seoul at midnigh
She visited the North Korean capital in 2002 and met with its late leader Kim Jong Il. Since then, his son Kim Jong Un has taken over in Pyongyang, continuing a policy of defiant work on the country's budding nuclear program, including a test earlier this month that drew widespread international condemnation.

She also promised a "clean, transparent and competent government".

"I will endeavour to shed popular distrust of government and strive to elevate the capital of trust," she said.

Thirteen Chadian and 65 Islamist rebel fighters have been killed in fighting in northern Mali, Chad's military says.It says five of its soldiers were wounded in the clashes in the mountainous Ifoghas region, reports BBC.
France intervened last month to help the Malian army oust Islamist militants who seized the vast northern region of Mali in 2012.

At least four dead as Bangladesh Islamists battle police

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has shown no sign of backing down, saying the trials will be completed at any cost. The government, which promised in its election pledges in 2008 to complete the war-crimes trials, set up the tribunals in 2010.The clashes come amid renewed tension over a tribunal judging war crimes committed during the 1971 independence war.

Last week, Bangladesh's parliament amended a law which will allow the state to appeal against the life sentence given by the tribunal to an Islamist party leader. In recent weeks a group of bloggers, including Mr Haider, had launched mass protests demanding his execution and a ban on the country's largest Islamist party, the Jamaat-e-Islami.Two people were shot dead by police in the northwestern town of Palashbari, and two others died elsewhere, police told AFP.Parts of the capital Dhaka were turned into a battlefield as thousands of protesters attacked police with bricks and sticks in front of the national mosque. U.S. Grounds Entire F-35 Fleet Over Engine Issues

U.S. Grounds Entire F-35 Fleet Over Engine Issues

The Pentagon on Friday grounded its fleet of F-35 fighter jets after discovering a cracked engine blade in one plane. The problem was discovered during what the Pentagon called a routine inspection at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif., of an F-35A, the Air Force version of the sleek new plane. The Navy and the Marine Corps are buying other versions of the F-35, which is intended to replace older fighters like the Air Force F-16 and the Navy F/A-18.

All versions — a total of 51 planes — were grounded Friday pending a more in-depth evaluation of the problem discovered at Edwards. None of the planes have been fielded for combat operations; all are undergoing testing. The move came nine days after the Pentagon cleared the F-35B jump-jet variant, designed for the U.S. Marines, to resume tests after a monthlong suspension. Both suspensions are due to problems with the engines. It also comes at a time when the program is facing increased scrutiny from lawmakers and senior DoD officials. The fault was detected during a routine inspection of an air force version of the jet (F-35A) at Edwards Air Force Base in California, said the Pentagon.Different versions are flown by the navy and the marine corps. All have been grounded. The F-35 is the Pentagon's most expensive weapons programme. with a cost of nearly $400bn (£260bn).The Pentagon said flight operations would remain suspended until the root cause is established.Bates added that the engine with the crack has 700 total engine operating hours, with 409 of those accrued in flight. He believes the engine analysis should take “roughly” a week. The F-35B was initially grounded after a Jan. 16 test flight at Eglin Air Force Base, Fla., was aborted due to an engine problem that was later identified as a fueldraulic system failure in the jet.Friday’s suspension of flight operations will remain in effect until an investigation of the problem’s root cause is determined. The Pentagon said the engine in which the problem was discovered is being shipped to a Pratt & Whitney facility in Connecticut for more thorough evaluation.

Hyderabad blasts: Shinde visits blast site

Hyderabad blasts: Shinde visits blast site

India’s Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde has visited the sites of two blasts in the city of Hyderabad in which he said 14 people were killed. Mr Shinde said Thursday’s bombs had been planted on bicycles 150m (500ft) apart near a crowded fruit market. Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde has said that an all-inclusive investigation into the Thursday night twin bomb blasts at Dilsukhnagar area of Hyderabad was in progress and the culprits who masterminded the crime will be identified and nabbed soon. Mr Shinde also categorically said his ministry had not issued any “area-specific alert” to the Andhra Pradesh Government three to four days ago, warning that incidents such as bomb blasts would occur, as was being alleged. What was issued was “a general alert”, he affirmed.

The blasts triggered by Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) tied to two bicycles took place in the peak hour at two sites 100 metres apart outside a roadside eatery near Konark and Venkatadiri theatres.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Kiran Kumar, who visited the site shortly after the blasts, termed them asshockin"What happened in Hyderabad is shocking...innocent people have been killed...the state government has reacted swiftly," he said. The Chief Minister announced a compensation of Rs 6 lakh each for the families of those killed in the blast, and assured that the government would bear the expense of the treatment of those who got injured. He termed the Hyderabad blasts as "an act of the coward", asserting that those responsible would soon be brought to book. The death toll in Hyderabad blasts has reached 14 and authorities further it may rise further. 57 others have been injured in the blasts. Of the 14 dead, 12 bodies have been identified and handed over after post-mortem. Two bodies are yet to be identified. The Hyderabad twin blasts were taken up by the Opposition in the Lok Sabha. Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj called for political unity, saying, "The nation needs to be united, the political parties need to get united. The moment that happens, we will be capable in fighting terror."

She also questioned why no action was taken despite intelligence inputs. "The Home Minister himself is saying that he gave the information. But, if there was information, the blame doubles. If there was information, what was the Centre, state doing," Sushma Swaraj questioned.

UN rejects damage claim for Haiti cholera victims

UN rejects damage claim for Haiti cholera victims

Today, the United Nations advised the claimants’ representatives that the claims are not receivable pursuant to Section 29 of the Convention on the Privileges and Immunities of the United Nations,” spokesperson Martin Nesirky told reporters in New York.In November 2011, the Boston-based Institute for Justice and Democracy in Haiti filed a petition at UN headquarters in New York seeking a minimum of $100,000 for the families or next-of-kin of each person killed by cholera and at least$50,000 for each victim who suffered illness or injury from cholera.

The UN has never acknowledged responsibility for the outbreak - which has infected more than 600,000 people - saying it is impossible to pinpoint the exact source of the disease, despite the mounting evidence the epidemic was caused by poor sanitation at a camp housing infected Nepalese peacekeepers. The lawyer, Brian Concannon, said the victims' legal team would challenge the UN's right to immunity from Haitian courts, on the grounds that it had not established an alternative mechanism for dealing with accountability issues, as stipulated in its agreement with the government.

“The secretary-general again expresses his profound sympathy for the terrible suffering caused by the cholera epidemic, and calls on all partners in Haiti and the international community to work together to ensure better health and a better future for the people of Haiti,” Nesirky said.It argued that the U.N. and its peacekeeping force are liable for hundreds of millions of dollars for failing to adequately screen peacekeeping soldiers, citing studies indicating that infected soldiers caused the cholera outbreak.

Russia To Try Hedge Fund Lawyer Posthumously

Russia To Try Hedge Fund Lawyer Posthumously

The Magnitsky case has become a major sore spot between Russia and the west. A U.S. law freezing the assets of and denying visas to 60 Russian officials Browder alleges were involved with Magnitsky's death led to a retaliatory law from Russia, barring U.S. citizens from adopting Russian children.Russia's Investigative Committee said in a statement on Tuesday that it had finished its preliminary investigation of the tax evasion case that led to the arrest of Magnitsky in 2008.

For foreign investors, Magnitsky's case has become a source of concern over the fairness of Russia's judicial system.
US-born fund manager Bill Browder, who runs Hermitage Capital, spearheaded efforts in the US to put pressure on Russia over the Magnitsky case. Mr Browder was a major investor in Russia before Mr Magnitsky's arrest. is death became an international cause-celebre and the United States passed a law in his name calling for sanctions on Russians accused of involvement in the fraud.

Browder also alleged that the Russians may have killed a person he called a whistleblower helping him trace some stolen tax money. 44-year-old Alexander Perepilichny dropped dead in London a few months ago; Browder said he was in otherwise good health and that the cause of his death is unclear.
